Tungsten carbide parts Mining industry - Stone processing

Pietra_BN

There are numerous fields where the use of hard metal may be needed

An example is that of mining drilling of oil wells and tunnels with the use of Mining and Perforating Tools. In this sector, mining tools reach impressive volumes and cover a surprising range of shapes and solutions.

These drilling and percussion tools are equipped with hard metal tips, so-called "Bits Button" that can be soldered or mechanically fastened

Only Artificial diamonds can replace such inserts, but only when the conditions are ideal because drilling is a very tough job, hard metal inserts remain the most used option because it can offer a good compromise of durability and cost.

Hard metal inserts for the mining industry have chisel or wedge shapes, or hemispherical shaped buttons.
They are composed of WC-Co grades with cobalt content, which in this case are relatively simple and feature a surprising amount of shapes and settings, in the range of 2 to 20% with a grain size of 1 to 10 microns.

They are divided into two groups depending on the type of operational movement:

1. Drilling with rotary cutting through or inside rocks, stones or minerals

2. Alternate rectilinear percussion that tends to pulverise rocks, stones or minerals
